James Edward Asbury Sr., born August 25, 1964, in Cuero, Texas, to the late Harum and Margaret Asbury, was a longtime resident of New Iberia, Louisiana. He passed away on March 25, 2026, after a courageous battle with stage 4 lung cancer.
James was a hardworking and dedicated man. At just 16 years old, he began working at Courrege’s, which quickly became one of his favorite places—especially because of the time he spent working alongside John Courrege, whom he cared for deeply. Over the years, he built a strong work ethic and a respected career, working with T-John Construction, B&L Engine repairing 18-wheelers and trailers, and later as a machinist at Louisiana Machine Shop, where he also formed a valued friendship with Keith Bourque.
He was truly one of a kind—a skilled mechanic with a remarkable ability to bring engines back to life. Known for his grease-stained hands and unmatched talent, James could fix just about anything with a motor. His passions extended beyond his work to his love of old cars, riding his motorcycle, traveling, driving fast, and listening to music. Above all, he cherished time spent with family and friends and enjoyed being outdoors in the sunshine. James was one of the toughest men to walk this earth and will be deeply and forever missed.
He is survived by his devoted fiancée of four years, Karen Segura; his five children, Lacey Gurak (Ryan), James Asbury Jr., Jayne Ingram (Daniel), Joni Guidry (Cade), and Desira Asbury; his sister, Jean Ware; and his brother, Larry Asbury. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Parker Mills, Blake Asbury, Landon Gurak, Beth Asbury, Kaydence Ingram, Kaleigh Gurak, Natalie Ingram, Curtis Guidry, Nolan Asbury, Nathan Guidry, and Hadleigh Asbury. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Harum and Margaret Asbury; his late wife, Mary Beth Asbury; his infant son, Billy Ray; his infant daughter, Jamie Asbury; his sisters, Mary “Boots” West (Bobby West), Jacket Moritz (Conrow Moritz), and Brenda Coleman (Monty Key Sr and Lester Coleman); his brother, Harum Asbury Jr.; and his sisters-in-law, Deborah Asbury and Marjorie Asbury; brother-in-law Ronald Ware; nephew Kirk Asbury, Jeremy Asbury; niece Crystal Coleman and great nephew Bryce McVety.
