Richard Patrick Lewis, "Hippie"

New Iberia, La. - Richard Patrick Lewis, “Hippie”, a lifelong resident of New Iberia was a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. He transitioned from this life on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at 8:05 A.M. at his residence surrounded by his family in New Iberia, La. He was 71.

Richard was born to Felton Myers and Nettie Lewis Tauriac on August 3, 1951. He attended and graduated from St. Edward Catholic School, at the time an all-black school for the community servicing all grades. On April 10, 1970, Richard enlisted and was accepted into the United States Air Force. He honorably served and received the National Defense Service Medal for his time spent in the Vietnam War.

Through the years, “Hippie” was a long-standing New Orleans Saints fan. He loved to dance. Despite life’s challenges, music continued to be a prevailing comfort. His favorite artists were Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye. He wholeheartedly lived his life and did his best to enjoy every moment.

Richard will forever be remembered by his three daughters: Tina Walker (Larry), Mary Davis (Edward) and Shannon Davis; one son: Shawn Davis; two sisters: Nettie Mae Elliot and Cynthia Boudreaux; one Godson: Sadante Provost, Sr.; seventeen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Marlon, Malia and Will; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Beverly Broussard Lewis; his parents, Felton Myers, and Nettie Lewis Tauriac; and six brothers: Horace Ray Lewis, Arthur Tauriac, John Tauriac, Wilfred Tauriac, Marvin Lewis, and Rev. Edward Tauriac.
